About this tool

Why it exists.

Computers store text as numbers, and numbers as bits. Seeing a word written in zeros and ones is a classic way to understand that idea, and it is also handy for puzzles, teaching and quick checks of how a character is encoded.

This converter works in both directions. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes and each byte is shown as eight bits, so A becomes 01000001 and an accented letter such as é becomes two bytes. To decode, paste groups of eight bits separated by spaces. If a group is wrong, the tool tells you which one.

How to use it.

  1. Choose Text to Binary or Binary to Text.
  2. Type or paste your input.
  3. Copy the converted result.

Good questions.

Why are some characters more than 8 bits?

UTF-8 uses one byte for basic English letters and two to four bytes for other characters, such as accented letters, symbols and emoji.

What format does the binary input need?

Use groups of exactly eight 0s and 1s separated by spaces or new lines, for example 01001000 01101001 for Hi.

Is binary a form of encryption?

No. It is only a different way of writing the same data, and anyone can convert it back. Do not use it to protect secrets.
