About this tool
Why it exists.
Unit conversion is simple until it is not: fluid ounces differ between the US and UK, a tonne is not a ton, and digital storage mixes decimal and binary prefixes. This converter groups units by family and labels the measurement systems where they differ.
Length, mass, area, volume, speed, time and data conversions use exact base-unit factors. Temperature uses dedicated formulas rather than a simple scale factor. Results are formatted to avoid floating-point noise while keeping useful precision.
How to use it.
- Choose a category and enter a value.
- Pick the from and to units, or swap them.
- Copy the result for your recipe, drawing or spec sheet.
Good questions.
Is a US gallon the same as an imperial gallon?
No. One US gallon is 3.785411784 litres; one imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres. The converter labels both so a recipe or fuel figure does not silently change meaning.
Does a gigabyte mean 1,000 or 1,024 megabytes?
Decimal storage uses powers of 1,000 (GB), while binary storage traditionally uses powers of 1,024 (GiB). Drive manufacturers tend to use decimal, operating systems often display binary. The tool includes both families to keep the distinction explicit.
