About this tool
Why it exists.
Grade point average, or GPA, turns letter grades into one number so progress is easy to compare. Each grade has a value, and each course counts according to its credits, so a 4-credit course affects the average more than a 2-credit one.
Add your courses with credits and a letter grade. The calculator multiplies credits by grade points, adds them up and divides by total credits. To include earlier terms, enter your previous GPA and credits and it works out the cumulative GPA. It uses the common US 4.0 scale, so check your own school's scale before relying on the result.
How to use it.
- Enter credits and a grade for each course.
- Add your previous GPA and credits if you want a cumulative GPA.
- Read the term GPA, cumulative GPA and total credits.
Good questions.
How is GPA calculated?
Total grade points divided by total credits. Two 3-credit courses with an A (4.0) and a B (3.0) give (12 + 9) ÷ 6 = 3.5.
Why does my school give a different number?
Schools differ: some count A+ as 4.3, some use weighted or honours courses, and some round differently. Use your school's published scale if it differs.
How do I add my earlier GPA?
Enter your previous GPA and the credits behind it. The tool adds those grade points to this term's before dividing by the combined credits.
